Video: Great white shark attacks dive cage in Gansbaai or did it?

Did tourists cage diving in South Africa get their money’s worth when a great white shark decided to show off its ferocity?

We would say no. The media has gone wild with assertions that this shark attacked divers in cages, when in fact this was a typical bad bait placement which lead to the poor shark getting jammed on the shark cage.

Jamming Great White Sharks in Cages – Not Cool – Ever

The savage moment was captured on video in late November out on the water in Gansbaai, South Africa – a popular cage diving and whale watching destination – and was exactly what the divers were hoping for. The shark was spotted by onlookers on the dive boat who can be heard gasping in the footage as the great white comes up from the water with its jaws wide open. Like a scene out of the hit thriller Jaws, the shark bites the cage with force about 10 times, and doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon.

Bait Handler Epic Fail in South Africa?

Luckily, the shark is distracted by the bait handler throwing food into the water and stops, unlike a similar incident in Mexico in October last year where a 4m great white smashed through the metal dive cage with people inside. An incident we decried when it happened. As this shark swims away the dive cage is lifted and the divers are clearly impressed – laughing and gasping over the thrilling experience.

“That was fu**ing awesome!” one can be heard saying. While another tells his friend “that was the best, man!”.

Although the divers seemed to enjoy the event, it’s clear it’s not an activity for the faint hearted.
