Immerse Yourself in Nature...Immerse Yourself in Baja!

Rocas Alijos Seamount

One of the most virgin dive destinations in the world, located 155 miles off of the Baja, California peninsula and 480 miles south of San Diego, this destination is for the true adventurer in all of us!

In 2007 and 2008 we visited Rocas Alijos Seamount twice and came away believing that this place is well worth the trip! Huge schools of yellowfin tuna, prowling wahoo, green sea turtles, 8 foot wingspan mobulas, whale sharks, Galapagos sharks and hammerhead sharks plus a plethora of panamic Baja reef species! Plus, in both of our visits we had visibility in excess of 100 feet and quite often approaching 150 feet!

So far, Rocas Alijos Seamount has met and exceeded all of our expectations. But diving here is not for everyone, you'll need experience diving in current, depth and open ocean conditions...plus a keen sense of adventure!

So turn on the adrenaline, fire up the Nitrox and let's go dive and freedive Rocas Alijos!

Laguna San Ignacio

The World Heritage Site of Laguna San Ignacio is the mid way point of one of the longest known mammal migrations on the planet. Pacific gray whales make their annual 12,000 mile roundtrip trek from the Bering Sea to this warm shallow Baja, Mexico lagoon to calve and find suitable mates for future offspring.

San Ignacio Lagoon is one of only two places in the world where you can experience eye to eye encounters with these friendly whales. Imagine yourself looking into the eye of a 40 foot long female whale as she nudges her calf into the touch of your outstretched hand.

Our vessel 'Horizon' is one only 5 vessels allowed into the lagoon. It is hard to describe the feeling of standing on the main deck at night listening to the exhaled breath of multiple whales as they slowly lumber in an out of the lagoon.

While we are in the lagoon, Ecoturismo Kuyima will provide our whale watching and beach combing tour support. We provide sustainable eco-tourism adventures by working with Green Globe certified Kuyima as our local guide.

On your 10 day, 9 night 'Voyage Along the Baja' you will experience to two of Baja's beautiful desert islands for hiking, kayaking, diving and snorkeling, spend 3 days in Laguna San Ignacio with the whales and amazing bird life and then venture farther south to Baja's biological jewel, Bahia Magdalena. Then finally on to Cabo San Lucas for your flight home.

Between destinations you'll be mesmerized in the small ship atmosphere while relaxing on your floating hotel. Daily presentations by our staff, sumptuous meals and casual camaraderie in a relaxed atmosphere...you are on vacation!

Step out of the stress of the day to day norm, and 'Immerse Yourself in Nature' with a Voyage to the Whales of Laguna San Ignacio!

Guadalupe Island

Guadalupe Island...beautiful...remote...electric...one of the eastern Pacific's top 4 big animal destinations!

Guadalupe is among the most exciting and virgin dive adventure destinations in the world! Located 210 miles south of San Diego and 150 miles west of the Baja peninsula, Guadalupe is remote. Fewer than 50 divers are estimated to scuba dive this island each year!

We offer two distinct itineraries to Isla Guadalupe, SCUBA and Great White Shark Dives. Our SCUBA Adventures will take you to this amazing place in early summer. While our SHARK Adventures focus on mid to late summer, during the time when the sharks migrate into Guadalupe's surrounding water in the greatest numbers.

Scuba divers typically encounter vast schools of jack mackerel, leopard grouper and a plethora of other temperate water species! Yellowfin tuna and wahoo are seen here as are Guadalupe cardinalfish, Cortez chub, Scythe-marked butterflyfish, swallow-tailed damselfish, Clarion angelfish and very charismatic red-tailed triggerfish!

Large animal encounters are at a premium, and are guaranteed at almost every dive site. Guadalupe fur seals, California sea lions and green sea turtles keep it lively. Encounters with northern elephant seals and Pacific bottlenose dolphin are not out of the ordinary!

There is also a population of Cuvier's beaked whales that frequent Bahia Norte, and with a little luck we may have a chance in water encounter with these very shy whales.

Guadalupe is a favorite because of its unique remoteness and beauty. It is untouched and wild! The island is surrounded by very deep water (300-3000 feet!). Consequently, the water is usually very clear, abundant with pelagic life and the temperature from May - September is typically 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Water visibility is typically 100 feet or greater!

This destination requires an upper intermediate to advanced diver skill level. If you're looking for a destination that offers the possibility of big animals with and easy departure from San Diego, California, Guadalupe Island is your destination!

San Benito Islands

San Benito Islands (Islas San Benito), a group of three small volcanic islands, 280 miles south of San Diego and 50 miles west of the Baja peninsula, is a diver and eco adventurers playground.

These islands hold a vibrant mix of colorful southern California undersea life in its magnificent kelp beds along with multiple species of pinneped, birds and desert island plants. The amount of life found underwater at San Benito has been likened to that of the Channel Islands 75 years ago!

Kelp diving is at its best here--each island is ringed with thick lush kelp beds loaded with temperate, tropical and sub tropical fish species. The giant kelp plants are anchored to convoluted rocky reefs, home to unbelievable amounts of abalone and lobster. Near shore are shallow sand flats where bat rays are typically found, while offshore we've seen mobulas, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks and marlin!

Many offshore islets and submerged pinnacles exist here, bathed in ocean currents and covered with thick invertebrate life. Purple hydrocoral grows on these pinnacles in abundance, surpassing even that of Northern California. Large schools of gamefish, especially yellowtail, can be seen swirling around these offshore pinnacles. The Alley and The Rock are perhaps the island's most famous dive locations, for it is here that large schools of pelagic 20-40 pound yellowtail are almost always found.

For scuba divers, one of San Benito's greatest assets is certainly the abundance of California sea lions and Guadalupe fur seals. These beautiful pinnipeds make their homes in the small pocket coves and rocky outcroppings. Most notable is San Benito's middle island, the site of a breeding colony and absolutely crammed full of sea lions.

During our eco-tours you will have the opportunity to hike on the west island along the spectacular rocky shoreline while viewing northern elephant seals, California sea lions and fur seal rookeries. Multiple species of desert birds and plants are found here. Osprey are very abundant and at times can be quite photogenic.

Our scuba, freediving and eco tours make stops at San Benito. Scuba divers of intermediate to advanced levels will enjoy this destination. If you are an eco explorer that enjoys the beauty of Baja, and are into desert island botany and birding, this is a great stop for you to experience.

If you've wanted to see a supercharged version of California's Channel Islands, San Benito Islands is your destination!

Isla Cedros

This immense island, larger than California's Catalina Island, is located 285 miles south of San Diego and 15 miles east of Islas San Benito and 8 miles off of the Baja peninsula.

For scuba divers and freedivers, this island is relatively unexplored as we have visited it's beautiful kelp forests, pinnacles and pinniped rookeries on only 3 occasions. But you will find Cedros listed on a more regular basis in 2009 and beyond.

Our eco adventures to Cedros provide excellent day hikes with the views from the top of its 3500 foot tall spine absolutely breathtaking! We have two hiking routes up large arroyos that lead us to the top. The southern most trail leads past an abandon copper mine, and makes you wonder how they moved the heavy equipment up such a small ravine.

Pinnipeds are in full force here, with large elephant seal rookeries lining the north-eastern shoreline and California sea lions abundant everywhere else. The kelp forests of the western and southern sides are lush and ready for exploration.

This destination is for intermediate to advanced divers and explorers. We visit Isla Cedros on our Eco and Scuba Adventures and plan to spend more time here in the near future.

Look for itineraries that include the unexplored Island of Cedros!

San Martin Island

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed past this small island in 1542 just a few days prior to discovering San Diego. What he saw over 400 years ago is what we'll see today!

This kelp encircled island, 145 miles southeast of San Diego and only 3/4 of a mile in diameter, is chocked full of character above and below the waterline. The west side of the island is home to a small lagoon that is generally filled with inquisitive harbor seals. The islands tallest peak is a 500 foot tall extinct volcano located directly in the islands center. The view from the top is amazing as you can take in the Pacific Ocean on one side and the coast of nearby Baja, California on the other!

Cabrillo may have witnessed the above water beauty of this tiny island, but we're sure that he didn't take advantage of the underwater splendor of San Martin's kelp forest and offshore pinnacles! The pinnacles, Roca Ben (Ben's Rock) and The Breakers, lie two and six miles from San Martin. They are both surround by very deep water and attract an abundance of temperate and occasional sub-tropical species! Swirling schools of mackerel, blacksmith and half-moon attract larger pelagic fish to what can at times be a visual feast of schooling aggregations. Pacific barracuda, northern yellowtail and occasionally yellowfin tuna swoop in the on the smaller schooling baitfish while the animals that call the reef their home go about their daily business.

The reef structure is extreme, rising out of over 150 feet of water, and is encrusted in cold water sponges and hydrocoral, sea fans and other invertebrates. Cold water rockfish share time with temperate fish and quite often very large spiny lobster are seen in the 10 - 14 pound range! This two pinnacles, even though the water visibility can quite often be variable, is a feast for the underwater photographer!

Due to San Martin's small stature, we typically stop here for only a day at most. The diving is typically intermediate to advanced and the hike to rim of the islands crater can be strenuous. Scuba diving and snorkeling are classic California and are worth a full day of exploration.

Whether you will be visiting this small offshore oasis on an Eco, Scuba or Freediving Adventure, San Martin Island is classic Baja, and ripe for exploration!
