May 22, 2011 Catalina Island
Captain’s Log May 22, 2011 Aqualung Day 2
After a peaceful night sleep in two harbors we pulled up the anchor and headed out to ship rock. The ocean was flat calm and the water looked inviting. We only have a short amount of time today before we head back to port so we decided to stick with it for the day. The wind was non-existent at 0 knots and the current was mild. A few divers decided to circumnavigate the rock enjoying the steep wall on the north side of the rock. Large horn sharks were making their way along the base of the wall while schools of black smith played in the current. Sea Hares were doing the mating dance in the rubble near the rock. Morey eels were nestled in the cracks along the south wall. What is left of a sunken sail boat was a nice treat for some of the divers who ventured out into the sand. Barracuda were charging through the bait fish right under the boat. Ship rock always has so much life it’s a great dive sight to finish off a great trip. As the last few divers returned, nothing but smiles were on their faces. As we got under way we were engulfed by hundreds of dolphin riding the bow. Just another hard day at work aboard Horizon. Next weekend we are headed back out to San Clemente island to enjoy more diving and hopefully more sunny days.
Till then,
Captain Spencer
