May 15, 2011 San Clemente Island
Captain’s log May 15, 2011
As we arrived at San Clemente it was pouring down rain. Not the best way to start our last day. As we got the boat set up at Purse Seiner rock the rain subsided. It’s time to get wet. We did one dive at the rock that is on the east side of the island. The water was clear and warm. Bait balls were everywhere with schools of barracuda darting through. Tons of bat rays lay in the sand surrounding the rock. Big lobsters were packed tightly in the large crack on the rock. Angel sharks buried themselves in the sand under the boat. Everyone had a great dive here and enjoyed all the life that surrounded the rock. We only have a little time left so we made a quick move south to the end of the island.
As we approached Pyramid Cove the wind was coming down both sides of the island. We decided to set up the boat at China Hat. This would give us protection from the wind swirling around the island. The visibility was an easy 60 feet with the temperature just above 63. Torpedo rays hovered in the kelp for divers to admire like a lost space ship. A playful harbor seal followed a few divers for their whole dive. Abalone where seen under the large rocks looking for a bit of kelp to eat. Some divers ventured into the shallows where they said it was the most amazing dive they have ever done. China Hat has so much to offer it always pains me to say we have to leave. As we pulled up our anchor and headed home the sun was shining bright and the wind was at our back. Couldn’t have asked for a better end to the day. As we traveled home we ran into many pods of dolphin and even saw a few whale blows off in the distance. Everyone had a great trip and is excited to join us again soon aboard the Horizon.
Till then,
Captain Spencer
