June 26, 2011 San Clemente Island
Captain’s Log June 26, 2011 San Diego Dive; club day 2
The morning dive was held at Cary’s Cave, a large cavern at 70 feet in Pyramid cove. Those that found the cavern saw lobster and some nudibranchs below the protection of the kelp canopy. The surge was not bad at the base of the cave and those on top of the reef still reported 40 feet of visibility and lots of life. We finished the trip at Twin caves, just around the corner from Pyramid point. The kelp canopy here is very thick this year extending all the way to Fish hook reef. The water clarity was epic and those that dared to join the infamous ‘red dress dive’ enjoyed the pleasure of diving in costume trying to navigate through the lush forest and life that abounds at this tucked away reef at San Clemente. We saw more blue banded gobies, a leopard shark, and some large breeding female lobsters along with some male garibaldi’s trying to protect their nests from predatory divers. At the base of the drop-off batrays traversed the edge of the kelp forest looking for a mate. A large school of yellowtail was even sighted by one of the crew, which made it even harder to pull the anchor and head home. This group is always the crews’ favorite trip of the year, they have been coming out with us for so many years; they are always treated like family.
On the way home, the awards ceremony was held at dinner. Our own crew member, Kyle Faust was announced winner of the red dress dive and proudly accepted his prize gift certificate to Red Robin Restaurant. After dinner we were treated to videos and a slide show of the highlights of the weekend. We thank the San Diego Dive club for their generosity and patronage all these years and look forward to the next trip.
