June 11, 2011 San Clemente Island
Captain’s Log June 11, 2011 Ocean Enterprises 1 Day San Clemente
Off we go again, headed out to beautiful San Clemente Island. The ride last night couldn’t be any smoother. The air is crisp yet the water looks clean. I set the boat up at the world famous ‘Little Flower’ reef. The kelp was standing straight up and we could see shells on the bottom at 45 feet. Eager to jump in we opened up the gates at 7AM and everyone went for a swim. What a great dive!!! Large nudibranchs were covering the rocks. Huge schools of sardines were circling under the boat hiding from the barracuda. Everyone loved the site and there is so much to see we decided to stay for a second dive. Again, most everyone took the plunge into the clear blue water. Even though the sun has yet to come out everyone came back with great stories of the under water world. Bat rays were gliding along side the divers who went up in the shallows. Lobsters were doing the mating dance just outside there dens. Sea hairs were also doing their own version of the mating dance. Some divers brought their cameras and came back with some great shots. After everyone returned we pulled up the anchors and headed off to our next site.
Around the corner we go and see what Pyramid cove has to offer. During lunch we motored around to see what dive sites have the best conditions. ‘China Hat’ was the best choice for the afternoon dives. The current was mild out of the east and the water was a toasty 61 degrees. A friendly harbor seal looked on as everyone leaped off the side of the boat. A group of sea lions pestered some divers during their entire dive. The steep walls of ‘China Hat’ offer some very dramatic terrain for the divers. Large Garibaldi’s were feeding in the shallow eel grass. What a great way to end the day of diving. With the wind and seas at our back we head home to offload the group and pick up our next set of victims for another day trip back to San Clemente Island.
Till tomorrow,
Captain Spencer
